CERN

A registered club since 1960

In the beginning...

The CERN Record Club started life as a sub section of the music club in 1960, but with the demise of the music club at the end of 1965, the CERN Record Club was formed in it's own right. To start with, the club had a collection of about 80 mainly classical discs (of course all vinyl). The club continued at various locations around CERN for about the next twenty years. Each year the number of discs and the number of members continued to grow and in 1982 the club moved to it's last but one location in Bld 555, at this time it had about 3000 vinyl discs and 280 members.

In 1985, the "big bang" for the CERN Record Club came with the change over to CDs. To start with, the club had 50 pop CDs and 50 classical CDs, this move caused a large rise in membership and borrowing for the first few years, and although both the borrowing and membership has now settled down to a fairly regular amount, the number of CDs available has continued to increase each year (we buy on average one disc per day!). From a very modest beginning of 100 CDs the club has grown to a library today of about 4000 CDs and 500 DVDs.

The club offers a great deal of CDs and DVDs

In 2003 the club moved to its present location, in Restaurant 2 (building 504).

To be continued...
